=============== README file for the Sources of the 2026 Calculus in Context Distribution =============== The purpose of the 2026 CIC distribution is to make all files related to Calculus in Context freely available, subject only to the Creative Commons license CC BY-SA described below. There are numerous PDF and ZIP files in the distribution. A key part of the distribution consists of all source files needed to create the book Calculus in Context and also the Solution Manual. These files are contained in two ZIP files: cic.zip: This ZIP file contains the master LaTeX file cic.tex for the whole book, together with LaTeX files for the chapters, prefaces, appendices, etc. It also includes all EPS files used in the book. cicsol.zip: This ZIP file contains the master LaTeX file cicsol.tex for the Solution Manual, together with all of the needed LaTeX and EPS files. We note that the LaTeX file for the Instructor's Handbook has been lost. For this reason, there is no source file for the Handbook; the PDF is all we have. This PDF is available in the 2026 CIC distribution. =============== The Source Files in cic.zip =============== As noted above, the master file for Calculus in Context is cic.tex in the “cic” directory. In order to create your own copy of the book, here are two things to note: 1. The illustrations are all EPS files included via \includegraphics. so you use pdftex or pdflatex to produce the book. You can also use latex and dvi if you prefer. See below for more on the EPS files. 2. The 2026 distribution includes all of the .aux files and other files (.toc and .ind) needed to create the book. Hence running latex as described above should create a complete copy of the book. The resulting PDF file should have 942 pages. (On some systems, creating a complete copy might require running latex twice.) =============== The Source Files in cicsol.zip =============== Here, everything you need is in the directory “cicsol”, and the master file for the solutions is cicsol.tex. All of the illustrations are EPS files included via \includegraphics. See below for more on the eps files. As above, you can produce the solutions using either pdftex, pdflatex or latex and dvi. The resulting PDF file should have 188 pages. =============== Creating a Print Version of Calculus in Context =============== The master file cic.tex loads the hyperref package. Links in the text are highlighted in red to make them more visible. These links often look washed out when printed using a black & white laser printer. Uncommenting the line %\hypersetup{hidelinks} in the preamble of cic.tex produces a version of the book in which the links are black, though they are still active. This version is better suited for printing on a black & white laser printer. =============== The EPS Files =============== Previous versions of the book and the solutions used PS files that were included in the text via the \special command. For the 2026 distribution, the PS files were converted to EPS files that are included in the text via \inlcudegraphics. There are two things to note: 1. For an EPS file such as foo.eps, we have included the corresponding PDF file foo-eps-converted-to.pdf. This makes latexing go faster when using pdftex or pdflatex. 2. In the book, each EPS file is positioned "by hand" without using $$...$$ or \[...\] or \begin{center}...\end{center} or \begin{figure}...\end{figure}. In order to position an EPS file within such an environment, the bounding box may need to be adjusted. 3. Some figures in the book consist of multiple EPS files that may overlap. An example is the large figure on page 514, which involves three overlapping EPS files. Careful placement of each EPS file is essential. =============== Computer Programs in the Text =============== The text contains numerous instances of computer code similar to BASIC. Appendix A contains QBASIC versions of these programs that will run in QB64, freely available for Mac and Windows computers. The raw code can be found in the file chaps/append/AppendixA.tex. Interested instructors may want to create Mathematica Notebooks or Maple Packages based on these programs. A ZIP file containing the QB64 programs is available in the 2026 CIC distribution. =============== The Creative Commons License =============== The PDF and source files in the ZIP files described above are distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license CC BY-SA, version 4.0. As explained at the website https://creativecommons.org/cc-licenses/, the CC BY-SA license enables re-users to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format, so long as attribution is given to the creator. The license allows for commercial use. If you remix, adapt, or build upon the material, you must license the modified material under the same or a compatible license. More specifically: BY: Credit must be given to the creator. SA: Adaptations must be shared under the same terms. We note that the CC BY-SA license applies to all files in the 2026 CIC distribution. This includes the files described above plus the other PDF and ZIP files available in the 2026 CIC distribution. =============== Accessibility and Tagged PDFs =============== It is becoming more common to create accessible PDFs that are known as "tagged PDFs". As of 2026, tools for creating tagged PDFs via latex are a work in progress. The PDFs created directly from the source files provided here will not be tagged PDFs. =============== Final Comments =============== We hope that you find these files useful no matter how you decide to use them.
