Promoting inquiry in mathematics

Making Math is dedicated to providing teachers with curriculum that will inspire students to pose pure and applied mathematics questions and to develop the problem-solving skills and habits they need to answer those questions. It is about students using mathematics in open-ended, complex ways. It is about discovery, joy, surprise, and delight. It is about usefulness. In traditional courses, students learn a lot of information and technical skills, but they are rarely put in the game as junior mathematicians, or scientists, or historians. Students need regular opportunities to address questions where which skills are exactly needed is not immediately clear and where there are multiple paths to understanding (and to possible dead ends as well). Working through these activities and projects helps them hone their abilities to diagnose when to use the skills they have and also improves their proficiency with those skills in ways that merely repeating the skills in isolation cannot achieve. We look forward to helping you build classes where learning is inquiry based. Lifelong learners need to ask questions and see the power that mathematics (and all disciplines) gives them to help them answer those questions.
